What is Leadership?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>What is Leadership?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Leadership can be defined as the process of engaging and influencing others. This does not need to be done from a formal role; it can be seen <a id=\"post-131-_Int_2LO0Ftm2\"><\/a>through circulating nurses who provide leadership within their own operating rooms. Through precepting and training unfamiliar staff, <a id=\"post-131-_Int_2dQ8fjdx\"><\/a>advocating for changes based on the latest evidence, all registered nurses are leaders and can create change within the perioperative setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(MacPhee, 2020)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5>Key Attributes of a Great <a id=\"post-131-_Int_QbR4t55B\"><\/a>Leader<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"slider\">\n    <div class=\"slide\">\n        <div class=\"slide-content\">\n            <img src=\"https:\/\/perioperative1003.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/word-image-131-2.png\" width=\"25%\">\n            <p class=\"slide-description\"><strong>Uses a Strengths-Based Approach<\/strong> &#8211; A strengths-based approach to leadership is based on the notion that individuals are much more productive and effective if they focus on their strengths rather than their weaknesses. Using a strengths-based approach to leadership has been proven to have better outcomes than focusing on individual\u2019s shortfalls.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"slide\">\n        <div class=\"slide-content\">\n            <img src=\"https:\/\/perioperative1003.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/word-image-131-4.png\" width=\"25%\">\n            <p class=\"slide-description\"><strong>Has Emotional Intelligence<\/strong> &#8211; This is vital as a leader. One must know their own feelings and emotions as well as others. This is critical in stressful and challenging situations.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"slide\">\n        <div class=\"slide-content\">\n            <img src=\"https:\/\/perioperative1003.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/word-image-131-3.png\" width=\"25%\">\n            <p class=\"slide-description\"><strong>Uses Appreciative Inquiry<\/strong> &#8211; This is related to how leaders question and solve problems. Leaders must identify what is working well and build on those strengths when looking at addressing challenges.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"slide\">\n        <div class=\"slide-content\">\n            <img src=\"https:\/\/perioperative1003.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/word-image-131-5.png\" width=\"25%\">\n            <p class=\"slide-description\"><strong>Resiliency<\/strong> &#8211; Leaders must be able to bounce back and thrive after challenging situations. Through coping strategies such as seeking support, problem solving, and work life balance, leaders can demonstrate resilience.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"slide\">\n        <div class=\"slide-content\">\n            <img src=\"https:\/\/perioperative1003.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/word-image-131-6.png\" width=\"25%\">\n            <p class=\"slide-description\"><strong>Demonstrates Mindfulness<\/strong> &#8211; It is easy to think ahead to future solutions or back to past events, but by being aware of what is happening in the present, leaders demonstrate mindfulness.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>(MacPhee, 2020)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-3 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-container-1 wp-block-column\">\n<h5>Leading Perioperative Change within Management<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>RNs can lead and support the perioperative <a id=\"post-131-_Int_fHtv3e9w\"><\/a><a id=\"post-131-_Int_yQ80Ps4c\"><\/a>environment in management roles.
