What is Malignant Hyperthermia (MH)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  1. It is a complication from volatile anesthetic agents and succinylcholine that is rare but can be life-threatening.<\/li>
  2. It is an inherited condition of the skeletal muscles.<\/li>
  3. Triggering agents include halothane, isoflurane, sevoflurane, desflurane, and the muscle relaxant succinylcholine.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Hypoxia and dark (desaturated) blood in the operative field<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

    Unstable or elevated blood pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

    Preoperative Assessment<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

    The circulating nurse is responsible for performing a preoperative assessment to identify if a patient has any predisposing risk factors for malignant <\/a>hyperthermia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The nurse looks for a patient history or family history of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. An undefined incident during an anesthesia<\/li>
    2. An undefined critical event and\/or death of a relative during anesthesia<\/li>
    3. Muscular abnormalities<\/li>
    4. Heatstroke<\/li>
    5. Myopathy or acquired muscle disease, rheumatoid arthritis<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Nurses should review patients\u2019 records for a Caffeine Halothane Contracture Test (CHCT) positive result from Toronto General Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
