If an MH event occurs, be prepared to transfer the patient to the ICU. Ensure that communication has been made as soon as possible.<\/li><li>The nurse should be prepared to call the North American MHAUS <a id=\"post-225-_Int_L4xv7HgF\"><\/a>Hotline, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(ORNAC 15th ed., 2021)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>MHAUS Hotline<\/strong><\/p><p>The Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States provides education and support to patients and health care providers dealing with MH and has a hotline available if help is needed during a crisis.<\/p><p>In US and Canada: 1 (800) 644-9737<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-5 wp-block-column\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"902\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/perioperative1003.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/word-image-225-19.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/perioperative1003.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/word-image-225-19.jpeg 902w, https:\/\/perioperative1003.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/word-image-225-19-226x300.jpeg 226w, https:\/\/perioperative1003.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/word-image-225-19-770x1024.jpeg 770w, https:\/\/perioperative1003.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/word-image-225-19-768x1022.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 902px) 100vw, 902px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5>What To Do if a Patient Displays Signs and Symptoms of MH Intraoperatively<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>The anesthesia provider stops the anesthetic gases and administration of succinylcholine and manages the anesthetics with non-triggering agents.<\/li><li>The surgery stops. The patient\u2019s incision may be closed or packed with sponges by the surgeon.<\/li><li>The scrub nurse continues to support the surgeon.<\/li><li>The circulating nurse should call for help, push the code button, and get the MH cart.<\/li><li>The circulating nurse (or others who are available) should initiate preparation of Dantrolene.<\/li><li>If the surgeon no longer needs assistance from the scrub nurse, the nurse may assist with the preparation of Dantrolene. They may obtain items needed such as IV pumps, the foley catheter, and items to cool patient down.<\/li><li>The circulating nurse continues to support the anesthesia provider and be the recorder if no one is available.<\/li><li>MHAUS may be contacted when more support is required by the anesthesia provider.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>(ORNAC, 2021)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5>Summary<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>MH is a life-threatening condition that occurs when volatile anesthetics and succinylcholine are administered to a susceptible patient. Care for a susceptible MH patient is a collaborative effort. The nurses could participate in the process of ensuring that optimal patient care has been delivered through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Being in constant communication with the surgical team around the preparation of the OR room and the patient. They should address any concerns of the patient.<\/li><li>Preparing the OR with equipment and supplies that are needed in the event of a crisis.<\/li><li>Performing a thorough preoperative risk assessment and knowing the signs and symptoms of MH.<\/li><li>Participating in education related to management of a patient in MH crisis.<\/li><li>Being familiar with the preparation and administration of Dantrolene, side effects, and dosing (2.5mg\/kg) of the medication.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5>\ud83d\udcfd\ufe0f AORN Cine-Med Video<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch the AORN Cine-Med Video: Malignant Hyperthermia Crisis: Team in Action<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This video provides a case study example of reacting to an MH crisis.
